Following the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe and Orderly Migration in Marrakech Morocco in 2018 NANHRI identified the need for a continental coordinated approach to sustainable Migration in Africa.  And for this to happen, NANHRI established the Working group on Migration chaired by Ms. Amina Bouayach, the President of the National Human Rights Council of Morocco.

In 2019, NANHRI and the National Council for Human Rights of Egypt hosted the 12th Biennial Conference in Cairo, Egypt. In addition to the terms of references adopted by the General assembly to guide the Working Group on Migration, the Cairo Declaration and Action Plan became an additional guiding document.

Among other assignments, the NANHRI Working Group on Migration has been organizing meetings and coordinating development of critical review documents for a focused contribution of the NHRIs to the national, regional and international discourse on sustainable migration.

The other Working Group members include the NHRIs of Niger, Kenya, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In November 2024 , the Working Group participated in the COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Click the link to read more: https://www.nanhri.org/events-2/?event=15993
